The word "Hanif" is one of the strange words of the Holy Quran, which has been the subject of numerous studies so far. The reason for the strange semantic meaning of this word is that the root meaning of the word "Hanif" is "deviant" and "impure", while in the Holy Quran, this word is used in the meaning of "monotheistic" as a description of Prophet Abraham (PBUH). It is clear that this profound semantic transformation occurred with a specific audience and with a specific purpose.
This word has been used in a specific Surah in some verses in the polemical discourse between the Quran and the People of the Book to deny the racist and superstitious beliefs of the Children of Israel. Using the knowledge of historical semantics can explain the reasons for the semantic transformation of the word "Hanif" in relation to the two semantic components of "health" and "Abraham" (PBUH).
The purpose of using the word "Hanif" instead of the word "Muhad" in the Holy Quran was to challenge the racist and superstitious beliefs of the People of the Book, unrealistic values, and to establish a monotheistic and rational system of thought in Islamic thought.
