Despite possessing aesthetic dimensions, the jurisprudential verses (Āyāt al-Aḥkām) of the Holy Quran have predominantly been examined only from the perspective of legal inference. This research, employing a descriptive method and rhetorical analysis with a focus on the verses of Ḥijāb, seeks to demonstrate that these verses—beyond their jurisprudential implications—utilize a complex and purposeful network of imagery and rhetorical devices. These elements directly enhance the persuasive, educational, and ethical aspects of the rulings.
The findings indicate that artistic imagery in these verses is neither accidental nor merely decorative; rather, it functions in complete harmony with the context of legislation as an underlying and effective layer that facilitates understanding, emphasizes importance, and creates psychological readiness in the audience for accepting religious obligations. Accordingly, various visual and aesthetic capacities—such as metaphor (majāz), simile (tashbīh), metonymy (kināyah), polysemy (ta'addud al-lafẓ wa al-ma'nā), ellipsis (ḥadhf), repetition (takrār), contrast (muqābalah), apostrophe (iltifāt), and paronomasia (mushākalah)—were identified and analyzed in these verses. Each of these devices acts as a link in the chain of textual coherence and contributes to the process of semantic signification.
The innovation of this study lies in integrating rhetorical studies with the jurisprudential content of the Quran and explaining the persuasive-educational functions of imagery in the verses of rulings (Āyāt al-Aḥkām).
