"The verse 'fa-arāhu al-āyata al-kubrā' in Surah al-Nāziʿāt is one of the symbolic verses of the Qur’an, reflecting part of the narrative of Moses’ confrontation with Pharaoh. Throughout Islamic history, this verse has given rise to a wide spectrum of interpretations and exegetical perspectives. This study, using an analytical–exegetical method and drawing upon Roland Barthes’ semiotics and Michel Foucault’s discourse analysis, undertakes a multilayered reading of the semantic and discursive dimensions of the verse. An examination of nearly one hundred Qur’anic commentaries reveals that exegetes’ views regarding the meaning and referent of the verse can be classified into nine categories, including the staff and the shining hand (al-yad al-bayḍāʾ). The semiotic analysis, by distinguishing three levels of signification—denotative, connotative, and mythological—demonstrates how exegetical interpretations have contributed to the stabilization and reproduction of diverse cultural, theological, and ideological meanings. Moreover, through the lens of power discourse, the study investigates the relationship between the verse’s interpretation and the structures and institutions of religious, political, and cultural authority within their historical contexts. The findings suggest that 'al-āyatu al-kubrā' is not merely a physical miracle but also a discursive battlefield reflecting the complex interplay of religion, power, and culture in sacred societies. The study underscores the importance of multilayered semantic approaches to Qur’anic verses through interdisciplinary perspectives, highlighting the necessity of situating sacred texts within their historical and discursive frameworks."
