Among the words mentioned in the Holy Quran that are attributed to Prophet Ibrahim is the word 'Azar'. Various perspectives have been presented by philologists and Quranic commentators regarding the nature and meaning of the word 'Azar.' These can be comprehensively examined from two aspects: its nature and its meaning. This study, aiming to provide a literary and linguistic analysis of the word 'Azar,' uses a descriptive-analytical method and library resources to elucidate the meaning and application of this word in the Quran. The findings indicate that several perspectives have been expressed regarding 'Azar': a name for an idol, a descriptive term meaning industrious and active, a word used to signify torment and prevention of vice, the name of Abraham's servant, the father of Abraham during his time of polytheism, and his father. However, in Islamic culture and after the descent of the holy Quran, 'Azar' is most commonly understood as the name of an idolatrous individual, whom the Quran refers to as the father of Ibrahim According to the widely accepted Shia view, Azar was either the uncle or maternal grandfather of Prophet Ibrahim. However, the prevalent belief among Sunni scholars is that he was Ibrahim’s biological father. Nevertheless, for various reasons—including the absence of "Azar" as the name or title of Ibrahim’s father in the Torah and historical sources, as well as the Qur’an’s distinction between walid (biological father) and ab (guardian or paternal figure)—it has been concluded that Azar was not Ibrahim’s true father.
