Abstract
The obligation of jihad, in general terms, is one of the essential rulings of Islam, rooted not only in the Quran and prophetic traditions but also supported by reason and rational human conventions. However, what the Muslim world severely suffers from today is suicide operations carried out under the name of jihad fi sabil Allah in public places, mosques, and holy shrines. This issue has unjustly led to accusations of violence and terrorism against Muslims and the Islamic creed, portraying Islam as a militant religion. The problem intensifies when some individuals attempt to ground such acts in religious teachings, seeking to prove their legitimacy at various levels of obligation, recommendation, or tradition. Therefore, scholarly critique of such theories is essential. This study, using a descriptive-analytical method and focusing mainly on Sunni exegeses and the views of Sunni scholars and exegetes, critiques the Wahhabi scholar Muslim Joudat’s reliance on Quranic verses to legitimize such operations. An examination of the verses permitting jihad and their interpretations in Sunni sources shows that suicide operations among Muslims do not constitute an instance of jihad fi sabil Allah and have no Quranic justification.
