Abstract

Social anxiety disorder is among the most common psychological disorders in contemporary societies, manifesting as a persistent fear of negative evaluation by others. It can negatively affect an individual’s self-confidence, interpersonal relationships, and social participation. Given the wide-ranging psychological and social consequences of this disorder, examining it solely within the framework of empirical psychology is insufficient; rather, it requires a more comprehensive perspective based on a theistic worldview. Accordingly, the present study aims to explain the factors contributing to the development of social anxiety and the Qur’anic strategies for reducing it. The main research question is: “What analyses and solutions does the Holy Qur’an offer for managing and treating social anxiety?” The research method is descriptive–analytical, relying on library studies and a comparative examination of social psychology sources alongside a thematic interpretation of related Qur’anic verses.

The findings indicate that factors such as perfectionism, fear of judgment, negative experiences, feelings of helplessness, fear of the future, and lack of meaning contribute to social anxiety. In contrast, Qur’anic teachings—through concepts such as trust in God (tawakkul), patience (sabr), belief in divine decree, and the meaningfulness of suffering—provide effective mechanisms for reducing anxiety and restoring inner peace. Thus, the Holy Qur’an, by emphasizing psychological and spiritual balance, offers an integrated model for treating social anxiety at both the individual and social levels.
