Abstract

One of the new ways to understand the text of the Quran is to use semiotic tools to discover the codes that activate the mechanisms of meaning production in the text. Surah Al-Fajr is one of the richest Surahs of the Quran in the field of semiotics. This research, relying on Roland Barthes' theory of five codes, has analytically examined the hermeneutic, functional, symbolic, cultural, and semantic codes in this Surah. The aim of this study is to discover the hidden semantic structures at different levels of semantic layers and to analyze the symbolic relations existing in the linguistic, historical and intertextual layers of the verses. Based on the findings of this study, hermeneutic codes show that by posing riddles resulting from the repeated oaths at the beginning of the surah, the occurrence of the resurrection is considered an undeniable matter. Action codes indicate that eventually the rebellious people like Pharaoh, Ad and Thamud will face divine wrath, while actions that are in the form of divine blessings and a reward for the good doers are also expressed. Semantic codes have created a wide semantic field for some words that expose the audience to a set of semantic interpretations. Words like "Fajr", which is a seemingly temporal word, have become one of the most densely semantic words in the surah. By recalling the history of tribes and rebels, cultural codes encourage people to avoid arrogance and undesirable actions that will ultimately lead to bad consequences.
